Cities of Crass

inadvisable:

“Every city has a sex and an age which have nothing to do with demography. Rome is feminine. So is Odessa. London is a teenager, an urchin, and in this hasn’t changed since the time of Dickens. Paris, I believe, is a man in his twenties in love with an older woman.”

John Berger, 1987. From our Fall 2010 issue on The City, which is now available online.  (via laphamsquarterly)

Uh … what?

Nashville: A mid-period George Jones
Knoxville: A late-period George Jones
Albany: An old man in a deli, trying to send back soup
Houston: A middle-aged doctor, underwater on his house
Austin: A recent college grad who was popular in her sorority but is secretly insecure about her looks
Dallas: A middle-aged lawyer, who spends far too much on strippers
Kansas City: A sweet grandmother who will talk your ear off about the wonderful times she had as a Harvey Girl back in the 1930s
St. Louis: A twenty-something guy who likes to tell you all about the great time he had last night at that club you couldn’t get in to

I love the description of Paris. Perhaps a nod to Flaubert. It reminds me of Frederic Moreau and L’Éducation...
