Remember, these are just the most popular Internet rumors spread about Obama. Imagine the off-handed bullshit passed along every day in personal e-mails and dinner conversations.
Muslim this. Un-American that.
Even the “green” items (the true ones) are sad, like this photo of a bookstore display that feature Obama-related books with one about monkeys.
It’s one thing if no one credits these lies. But 1 in 5 Americans believe Obama is Muslim, and they didn’t get that impression from so-called mainstream media. They got it from viral internet content: e-mails, Facebook links and the like. It’s not a good precedent for the future of American politics.
