First of All, I’d Have a Much Higher Regard for Tina Brown if In Fact She is Behind this Website

Tina Brown’s New Web Strategy Is a Total Game-Changer | VF Daily | Vanity Fair

Mark — when was dailybeast.tumblr.com registered? Since Tumblr launched before The Daily Beast, isn’t it possible the current owner registered first? I know everyone admires Brown as The Only Talented Editor Ever, but it’s not a terribly original or unique name. Even so, your link would presume to indicate that the Brown could ‘request it’ no matter what. Is that a policy position? That regardless of when users registered a tumblr, that no matter how relevant (or not) the content is, if a major media company develops a new property after that, the original owner loses? Is that what you were talking about at the meetup last week?

But! Assuming that she’s not, this is a good peg to talk about our policy re Tumblr names. Mainly, our position is, if someone has a copyrighted name established (for example, “Newsweek”) then they have the right to that name on Tumblr. In this case, however, there’s no issue; the name of Tina Brown’s publication is “The Daily Beast,” and that’s what their Tumblr name would be.
