“Se telefonando,” Mina (1966)

So I was searching around for music by Ms. Mina Mazzini after reading this quote from Gildo Zegna in GQ (of all places):

She’s the Aretha Franklin of Italy. Incredible voice. She was Italy’s first rock ‘n’ roll singer. They called her “the queen of the screamers.”

And this is what I stumbled upon: a song written especially for her by the legendary Ennio Morricone in 1966, with a chorus based around the three repeating notes of a police siren Morricone heard in Marseilles. One listen and it was love. Two listens and I realized that I’d heard the song before. Turns out Francoise Hardy covered it the same year—in French, as “Je changerais d’avis,” which I’ve posted below.

Very pleased to add another great European chanteuse—or should it be cantante—to the playlist.
