Sept. 3, 1959: “Late at night on West 46th Street, Patrolman Doherty, a policeman of the old school, surveys his beat — quiet now after a senseless double killing.” A 20-year-old man was charged with homicide four days after this photo was published. In the previous month, two 16-year-old boys had been killed at a playground on the West Side of Manhattan. Photo: Sam Falk/The New York Times

You just know the Jets had their way that night.

I just had to retake this shot from three weeks ago. I was losing sleep over it. The first time, I happened across the spot accidentally and was unprepared, so the original was handheld at 50mm & f/1.2 @ 3200 ISO (with about 50% cropped out). This time, on a tripod at 105mm & f/2.8 @ 100 ISO (and slightly earlier in the evening). Check it out at full resolution and see if you can spot the SR-71 Blackbird.

You really want to click through; this is amazing.

Rate New York City’s privately owned public spaces

Submitted by Michael Keller:

WNYC and The New York World collaborated on a project to map and report on New York City’s privately owned public spaces, aka POPS, to figure out how public these public spaces are. Through zoning incentives, New York’s city planners have encouraged private builders to include public spaces in their developments. Many are in active public use, but others are hard to find, under heavy surveillance, or essentially inaccessible. We put together this map below of this data from the Datamine and our ongoing findings are kept on our site here.

Spoiler: Zuccotti Park makes the list!

The President of Manhattan with the President of Tumblr, John Maloney.

I’m proud to announce the launch of my “In a Manhattan Minute” Tumblr, becoming one of only several elected officials across the country that utilize the micro-blogging platform. My Tumblr will showcase photos, video and daily updates on the activities and initiatives of the Borough President’s Office. To celebrate the launch, I visited the Manhattan-based headquarters of Tumblr, a company founded in 2007 that recently rated the 10th largest online social network. Tumblr currently hosts 30 million individual blogs.

So sorry to have missed this, but I’ll be following President Stringer’s Tumblr for future updates. Welcome!
